DENMAN
Population: 1509; 225km N
of Sydney; 24km W of Muswellbrook.
Coal production
and wineries have to some extent overshadowed dairying,
which was formerly a mainstay of this district. Set against
a line of hills on the fringe of the Hunter Valley, this
small town is becoming a wine producer, supplementing
its reputation for its horse and cattle studs. Verandahs
reach out over the delightful main street. A cottage built
by Commander William Ogilvie soon after he arrived in
the Hunter in 1823 has been classified by the National
Trust, and Baerami and Pickering are both historic homesteads.
St Matthews Church, commissioned by the Whites,
a family of settlers, is notable for its large roof.
