COONABARABRAN

Population 2500; 455 kms NW of Sydney via Bushman’s Way; 159 kms from Dubbo; 182 kms from Tamworth; 88 kms from Coolah.

Travellers heading for the Warrumbungles along the Bushman’s Way from Newcastle must pass through this pretty town. It has become a quiet comfortable farming town. The Warrumbungle National Park and the large astronomy facility at Siding Spring have also made it an important tourist centre, often called the Astronomy Capital of Australia.

The town features a number of historic buildings, most notably the court house in the main street. A clock tower, a memorial to war dead, stands at the main intersection in town.

Christ Church Anglican Church contains a colourful Ascension window. A window commemorating Greek ‘heroes and martyrs’ of World War II was donated by people of Greek extraction.
